Defensive Counting: How to Quantify ICS Exposure on the Internet When the Data is Out to Get You

  • 3pm
  • Tuesday, August 6th
  • Ground Truth, B-Sides

Though there are many industrial control system (ICS) devices connected to the Internet, simply counting everything that looks like it may be ICS is not the most accurate method for measuring ICS exposure. In this talk, Censys Principal Security Researcher Emily Austin will discuss the analysis process from data collection to determining whether an ICS protocol is a “real” device, what these numbers mean in context, and why you really can’t believe everything you see on the Internet.

What Do We Learn When We Scan the Internet Every Hour?

  • 3:30pm
  • Tuesday, August 6th
  • Ground Truth, B-Sides

Censys Senior Security Researcher Ariana Mirian will discuss findings from scanning the Internet every hour for a week, diving into examples where she observed the portion of the Internet was fairly stable (e.g. popular protocols on their standard ports) and where uptime was ephemeral (e.g. TCP SIP, HTTP on non-standard ports). Ariana will discuss what these findings mean for the Internet scanning community as a whole, implications for scanning research, and next steps.
